Ah yes, Prop 8! CA is famously liberal (or so we thought), and for a time gay marriage actually WAS legal. However, last Nov. the ballot measure Prop 8 basically took that right away. A great deal of funding in support of Prop 8 came from various churches (most prominently the Mormon Church). They wanted to "protect" marriage as many churches believe true marriage should only exist between a man and a woman. It was - I believe - the most heated item in the election here. Some say that if they had worded the language to read "civil commitment" (or something like that) it would have passed. At any rate, 8 passed narrowly, leading us all to believe at some point in the near future it'll be up for voting again.
No, it doesn't make sense that we're no-fault on adultery and yet gay marriage is illegal.
